Chapter News:
On May 16, 2008, Chapter One member Bruce Dixon died of liver disease. Thanks to the efforts and fundraising of Bill and Debbie Tomin of Rockridge Farm, a bronze memorial trophy was crafted in his likeness. The Bruce Dixon Memorial Trophy will be awarded each year to the High Point Trainer of the UPHA Chapter One Horse Show. The following is the speech read to the first recipient:
A quiet manner. The constant pursuit of perfection. Eyes with a
perpetual “twinkle”. A great sense of humor.
Those are just some of the qualities we attribute to those we deem as
“unforgettable”. Bruce Dixon was truly unforgettable. His legacy is
truly unforgettable.
From working at the cattle ranch in Colorado where he was raised, to
becoming a successful trainer in the Saddlebred, Morgan and Hackney
Pony industries with numerous world’s champions to his credit, Bruce
aspired to always be the best.
He was a great athlete, a great trainer and a great friend. One of
those guys who didn’t always have a lot to say, but when he spoke
people took notice. When he put horses and ponies in the show ring,
people always took notice, especially when they consistently went to
the winner’s circle.
He was patient, hard-working, quiet, and determined. He loved the
horses, ponies and people that were intertwined in his life, and it is
only fitting that this award should be created and named in his honor.
The recipient of this award no doubt shares some of the qualities that
made Bruce Dixon so unforgettable – patience, talent, dedication, and
humor. His life was cut short too soon, but it was a life lived to the
fullest and this award celebrates his legacy.
Congratulations to the first recipient of the UPHA Chapter 1 Bruce
Dixon Memorial Trainer’s Trophy, Garn Walker!
