UPHA Ribbons Of Service Program – New Starting in 2012
Starting in 2012 the UPHA Ribbons of Service Program will be open to all Junior Exhibitor Divisions in the Saddlebred, Morgan, Arabian (including Half-Arabian) and National Show Horse disciplines. Now, all Junior Exhibitor riders can ride with a new reason in mind: raising funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the rider’s selected charity. It’s a shared-commitment program that encourages riders to show an American Saddlebred, Arabian (including Half-Arabian), Morgan or National Show Horse in Junior Exhibitor and Saddle Seat Equitation classes, and encourages donors to pledge funds for charity for each class in which the rider shows. The rider is not only responsible for raising the donations, but for performing community service as part of his or her own contribution to the effort.
The Ribbons of Service program has been wildly successful. In 2011, $48,541.25 was raised of which $39,345.25 will go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (some participants chose other charities but all are approved nonprofit organizations). In the three year history of the program, our riders have raised over $121,000.
Generous sponsors have offered awards, prizes, and scholarships to reward the most successful UPHA Ribbons Of Service participant in each of the American Saddlebred, Arabian, Morgan, and National Show Horse categories. An overall award is available to the rider who raises the most funds (at least $1,000) and performs the most community service hours (at least 10). But for a rider to be eligible for the scholarships and prizes they MUST compete in 2 Saddle Seat Equitation Classes in a Saddle Seat Riding Suit. Classes at Academy Horse Shows will not count towards the 2 required Saddle Seat Equitation Classes. A rider my chose to participate in the UPHA Ribbons of Service program and not show in any Saddle Seat Equitation classes and raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the approved non-profit charity of their choice, but they will NOT be eligible for the scholarships or prizes.
UPHA Ribbons Of Service is about more than riders pledging to ride in junior exhibitor and/or equitation classes if a donor pledges to contribute funds for a worthy charity; it’s also about involving the rider in hands-on service to persons or organizations that need assistance. The rider’s community service hours must be tracked and verified, and the donations are submitted to UPHA according to the program deadlines. After the end of the program’s season (all funds and forms must be submitted to UPHA Foundation, Inc., by October 31), UPHA will recognize the top fundraisers in a special awards ceremony at the UPHA Convention, held in January.
UPHA Ribbons Of Service participants, who win their breed division, and the overall winner, will be recognized at the UPHA National Convention to be held in January each year.
The UPHA Ribbons Of Service Committee is available to discuss any questions you have about this program.

Announcing the 2011 UPHA American Royal Pink Ribbon Barn
Can your gang successfully challenge another barn, horse show or group to help fund the cures for breast cancer? Who will you challenge? How much will you dare them to raise? $200? $500? $1,000? More?
Here's how:
1) Gather your barn gang and set your goal. Decide how you'll raise the funds to bring to the Big Pink Showdown at the 2011 UPHA American Royal. Git yerselves a-goin'!
2) Register your challenge (use the form here). Stables, horse shows, youth clubs -- everyone can participate! We'll contact the group being challenged to let 'em know you've got 'em in your sights and you're gunning for them to meet or beat your fundraising challenge. They'll either accept your challenge or they'll get called out as the lily-livered, no-account cowards they are.
3) Then, show up -- with your money in hand -- at the Big Pink Showdown on Friday of the 2011 UPHA American Royal.
(Sure, you can send your funds if you can't be in Kansas City.) Stake your claim on bragging rights and practice your
swagger -- you could be the Pinkest Gunslinger at the Royal and win big prizes! But keep your back covered -- you never know what surprises are waitin'!

By USEF National Affiliates Department
Lexington, KY - The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) is teaming up with the USEF Saddle Seat Equitation World Cup Committee to celebrate the U.S. Saddle Seat Equitation World Cup Team's accomplishments during the 2010 Saddle Seat World Cup Competition held in Shelbyville, KY, last September.
A special luncheon will be held to provide awareness about the Saddle Seat Equitation World Cup Program. Guests will be able to meet team members who have participated in prior years and learn about what it takes to participate as a U.S. Team member, as well as how to support Team efforts.
The luncheon will be held at 12 p.m. on Monday, July 11, 2011, in the Round Barn (Floral Hall) at the Red Mile in Lexington, KY. The cost is $30 per person, and the total amount raised will benefit the 2012 USA Saddle Seat Team. Seating is limited so advanced reservations are recommended.

Through the partnership of the United Professional Horsemen's Association (UPHA), American Saddlebred Horse Association (ASHA) and American Hackney Horse Society (AHHS), a marketing campaign launching in August will put the Saddlebreds and Hackneys that we all love into millions of homes.
UPHA brought a company called Equestrian Life to the Boards of both the ASHA and AHHS after their leadership expressed interest in a possible partnership. Following Equestrian Life's presentation of their program, the UPHA, ASHA and AHHS committed to fund one-third each of the expense of a three-month run with Equestrian Life beginning in August.
Launched in 2008, Equestrian Life is an equestrian media and marketing company focused on social media and video/television production via its own social media Web site platform, as an Official YouTube Partner, and with television programming in partnership with HRTV. They have produced more than 100 hours a year of original television programming which reaches 21 million homes via the HRTV channel. Co-founders John McGraw and Deana Bergquist describe Equestrian Life as a combination of Facebook and YouTube for passionate horse people.
EquestrianLife.com is a multi-discipline site with a focus on people's passion for horses. Forty-seven percent of the 40,000 members have an English following with 37% Western. They have another 18,985 new visitors to the site each month and membership is NOT required to watch videos.
Equestrian Life was the official Social Media Partner of the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games, producing nine hours of original television programming. They are also the Official Media Partner for the United States Hunter Jumper Association, United States Dressage Federation, HITS $1M Grand Prix and the Devon Horse Show.
In partnership with the UPHA/ASHA/AHHS, the marketing goals would be to increase awareness of saddle seat riding and driving in the show ring and other venues in addition to developing a brand identity focused on concepts such as high energy, safe, modern, glamorous, uniquely American, fun for all ages, and an English riding/driving discipline that is not about jumping.
LEARN TO RIDE AND DRIVE IN STYLE will be the campaign name, which will feature a 30-minute television program (with commercials) that will run a minimum of nine times during the three-month period, as well as a 30-second commercial spot about the program that will play a minimum of 20 times on television, as well as its use on web sites and at shows and other events (i.e. the jumbo tron at Lexington, Louisville and Kansas City).
In addition, a custom page on Equestrian Life is being developed outlining the ins and outs of saddle seat riding and driving. Ten web style videos, approximately three minutes each, will be produced addressing the commonly asked questions about saddle seat riding and driving. There will be a 300x250 Web ad created about the program that can be downloaded and used across the web. Equestrian Life also sends media alerts to its 40,000 members regarding the television show and its times. Below is the sample webpage:
The Equestrian Life member newsletter will also be used to promote the show and campaign along with Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
So that we do have some kind of measure as to the reach of this campaign, a coupon for a free riding or driving lesson will be posted on the home page of the program on the web site. Those coupons can be redeemed at "UPHA approved" facilities across the country.
GUIDELINES FOR UPHA/ASHA/AHHS PROMOTIONAL PROGRAM APPROVAL:
- Must be an Active Member of two of the three organizations: UPHA, ASHA or AHHS
- Must have an active Saddle Seat riding lesson or driving lesson program.
- Must have a functioning website.
- Must provide a link to Equestrian Life on their website to the Saddle Seat page and Ride and Drive in Style page.
- Must honor and track each PROMOTIONAL PROGRAM coupon that gets redeemed at their lesson program, and provide this information to the UPHA.

FAQ's:
Do I have to use Saddlebreds or Hackney Ponies exclusively in the lessons I teach?
NO: Our main objective is to educate the general public about Saddle Seat riding and driving. Once you get those riders returning it is then our job to educate the new riders/drivers about the American Saddlebred and Hackney Pony.
How much paperwork do I have to keep track of?
Only the coupons brought to you for the free lesson. One of the objectives is to know how many free lessons were given through the program to determine if it was successful. You will need to give a count of coupon lessons given to the UPHA. The program will run in August, September and October 2011.
What's the benefit for me to be involved?
By becoming an approved program you will have "free" advertising of your program through the Equestrian Life website, print media, social media, and television commercials and program on HRTV. You will also have the opportunity to "sell" your program to new clients and build your lesson program, as well as our industry.
Why do I need to take photos of the students?
To promote the program, our discipline, our breeds, and your own business. It's as easy as using the camera on your cell phone and hitting the share option.
"This is an exciting time for the American Saddlebred, Hackney Pony and Hackney Horse," said one of the program organizers, Bob Funkhouser. "This program is all about reaching people in today's world and we will be reaching people who already have a strong equine interest or are looking to come aboard. We all saw what an incredible reception our horses and ponies received at the World Equestrian Games and now we have the opportunity to expose our animals and their many disciplines to a similar audience every minute of the day, every day of the week for a three-month period this fall."

Equitation riders' enrollment for 2011 season underway
St. Jude credits UPHA Ribbons Of Service program for help in
saving children's lives
(Lexington, Ky.) "The UPHA Ribbons of ServiceSM program is a wonderful example of how young people can use their passion for saddle seat equestrian riding to help the children of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. We are grateful to UPHA for developing the Ribbons of Service program, and grateful to the riders for raising more than $68,000 to support the St. Jude mission of finding cures and saving children," says Rick C. Shadyac Jr., chief executive officer of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
"Participation with our show horses is truly helping to save children's lives!" said UPHA President Bret Day. "The UPHA Ribbons Of Service program is achieving just what we hoped: it's shaping the lives of equitation riders by helping them learn to give back to their communities, it's promoting the sport of saddle seat equitation, and -- most importantly it's providing funds that help save children's lives at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee."
At UPHA's 2011 convention held recently in Boston, 350 attendees at a sold-out luncheon listened as Brian Boucher expressed his appreciation for the support that helped to save his daughter Jordan's life. Flanked by UPHA Ribbons Of Service participants, Brian described his horror when a Boston-area hospital told them to take his cancer-stricken daughter home, as nothing more could be done to help her. That afternoon, he and his wife noticed a St. Jude TV spot, and made the phone call. Within hours, they were on a plane headed to Memphis. Today, their beautiful daughter is cancer-free.
"Hearing the testimonial from a father of a child that St. Jude had cared for reinforced the pride I have in being a member of the UPHA. What could possibly be better than children riding horses to help other children?" Said Jim Taylor, owner and trainer at Memory Lane Farm in Medina, Ohio. Taylor's wife Jenny, also a professional horse trainer and UPHA member, adds, "The luncheon at the UPHA convention was both heart-wrenching and joyful. I was so proud of all the riders that worked so hard, not only to aid St. Jude Hospital, but to give back with their time to their local communities. Programs like the UPHA Ribbons of Service should be embraced by all."

Robertson said, "Together, our riders raised over $70,000 in funds for St. Jude and other charities and conducted 1,600 hours of community service in just two short years. We think that speaks highly of the young people who elect to participate in this program.
"Our generous sponsors have donated the awards given to the UPHA Ribbons Of Service participants. From valuable scholarships, to custom leather bags, to exciting vacations and jewelry, these saddle seat equitation riders have the opportunity to earn wonderful prizes for helping others," Robertson said. We invite every saddle seat equitation rider to participate." UPHA/ASHA/AHHS To Launch Joint Marketing Program
One of the most exciting results of the recent string of association conventions is the partnership of the United Professional Horsemen’s Association (UPHA), American Saddlebred Horse Association (ASHA) and American Hackney Horse Society (AHHS) to take part in a marketing campaign that will put the horses and ponies that we ride and drive for show, fun and sport competitions into millions of homes.
UPHA President Bret Day brought a company called Equestrian Life to the Boards of both the ASHA and AHHS after their leadership expressed interest in a possible partnership. Following Equestrian Life’s presentation of their program, the UPHA and ASHA committed to fund one-third each of the expense of a three-month run with Equestrian Life. Thanks to the generosity of Mary Gaylord McClean, the AHHS also joined in. If the program does what the groups think it will do, there is a plan for an extended contract.
“This company has done their home work and knows what it’s doing,” said an excited Day. “The reining horse people say this group has taken them to another level. The quality of their work is outstanding. They did a campaign for the Polo Association and it was so good that Ralph Lauren picked it up for their advertising campaign. They know how to sell the romance of each breed and we will be working with them to bring that romance out.”
EquestrianLife.com is a multi-discipline site with a focus on people’s passion for horses. Forty-seven percent of the 40,000 members have an English following with 37% Western. They have another 18,985 new visitors to the site each month and membership is NOT required to watch videos. Membership is required to participate in certain features such as Q & A and Corral. Their stats also show nearly seven pageviews per visitor and average time on the site is 5 minutes and 21 seconds, another very high number. Seventy-five percent of the membership is in the United States with 15% Canadian and 10% other/unknown.
A name has yet to be determined for the program that would be a three-month campaign attracting people to try saddle seat riding and driving. A 30-minute television program (with commercials) would be produced that will run a minimum of nine times during the three-month period as will a 30-second commercial spot about the program that will play a minimum of 20 times on television, as well as its use on web sites and at shows and other events (i.e. the jumbo tron at Lexington, Louisville and Kansas City).
In addition, a custom page on Equestrian Life will be developed outlining the ins and outs of saddle seat riding and driving.
The Equestrian Life member newsletter will also be used to promote the show and campaign along with Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
So that we do have some kind of measure as to the reach of this campaign, a coupon for a free riding or driving lesson will be posted on the home page of the program on the web site. Those coupons can be redeemed at “UPHA approved” facilities across the country. These facilities will have to meet certain criteria to be a part of the program and those parameters are currently being developed.
ASHA Board member Bob Funkhouser will be working with Equestrian Life on the development of the program with input from the three associations involved.
“This is an exciting time for the American Saddlebred, Hackney Pony and Hackney Horse,” said Funkhouser. “This program is all about reaching people in today’s world and we will be reaching people who already have a strong equine interest or are looking to come aboard. We all saw what an incredible reception our horses and ponies received at the World Equestrian Games and now we have the opportunity to expose our animals and their many disciplines to a similar audience every minute of the day, every day of the week for a three-month period this summer.”

UPHA PINK RIBBON, HORSES AND HOPE BRING MOBILE MAMMOGRAPHY TO KENTUCKY STATE FAIR
A combined effort between two equine-based organizations that raise awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer has resulted in mobile mammography being on site at the Kentucky State Fair World’s Championship Horse Show.
The UPHA Pink Ribbon Program (SM), a program of the United Professional Horsemen’s Association, and Horses And Hope (SM), a program of the Kentucky Cancer Program led by Kentucky First Lady Jane Beshear, will be trolling the barns and stalls to inform women about the risks of breast cancer and the importance of mammography. “Those who wish to have mammography screening while at the World’s Championship Horse Show may do so, thanks to a generous gift from UPHA,” said Jane Beshear. “Working together, we hope to reach women in the equine industry who may not have access to this potentially life-saving service.”
UPHA President James Nichols, of Metarie, La., said, “Our UPHA Pink Ribbon Program has collected almost $200,000 since its start. We are distributing those funds – which have been raised by horse shows -- to breast cancer organizations across the United States where they may be used to raise awareness, educate about early detection, and help to fund the cures for breast cancer.
“We are honored to work with the First Lady’s Horses And Hope program at a horse show where we can reach so many horsewomen,” Nichols said.
The alliance came about with the UPHA Pink Ribbon Program’s recent donation of $10,000 to Horses And Hope, which enabled the mobile mammography unit to be present on Thursday, August 26, during the Kentucky State Fair World’s Championship Horse Show. Horses And Hope will also share information from a booth located in the North Wing Exhibit Hall and be present in Freedom Hall’s center ring with the winner of the Ladies Roadster To Bike class on Thursday evening.

Important Request from USEF Saddlebred Committee
The USEF Saddlebred Committee has been in discussion about the problem of "excessive" coaching and yelling from trainers (and others) from the rail during competitions, and how it negatively effects the public perception of our breeds and sport. The Committee concluded that this is a "professional behavioral issue," and that it may be better addressed by the United Professional Horsemen's Association. The leadership of UPHA would like to remind its members to be courteous to spectators and exhibitors by keeping your rail-side coaching to a respectful minimum.

On March 13th, during UPHA Chapter 13’s annual fund raiser at the Hilton Hotel in Fairlawn, Ohio, Rennick Andreoli and his sister Linda Nix, stunned those present with a donation to the Chapter of $10,000 in honor of their father, the late Andre J. Andreoli. Earlier in the evening, the Chapter had also honored Mr. Andreoli by establishing a lifetime achievement award, in his name and by making him the first recipient.
A.J.’s Reata Farm was one of Ohio’s most famous. On this farm in the 60’s there was not only a great show string of horses, both American Saddlebreds and Morgans but also a breeding program that had such a great influence on both breeds that it is still felt today. Famous and historic horses associated with this farm include Hall of Fame Broodmare, Dixie Duchess and her offspring, WGC Belle Elegant, WC Summer Melody, WC Reata’s Virginia Wolf and WC Denmark’s Grand Duchess. Standing at Reata were the breeding stallions, Oman’s Desdemona Denmark, sire of those champions listed above and at least 20 other World Champions, the talented Wing Commander son, Danish Commander, and two of the most famous stallions in the Morgan Breed, Fleetwing and Vigil March. In its hay day, Reata housed as many as 100 horses, with show stars such as WC Reata’s Virginia Wolf, the Challenger, J Miller, Reata’s Elation, The Iron Duke, Glamorous Lucretia and many others, shown by the Andreolis and trained by Ray Pittman and Tom Butler. Reata’s 1966 dispersal sale set records some of which last to this day. Chapter 13 felt compelled to honor this great Ohio horseman for his many contributions to the horse industry. Although there is no way to properly show the Chapter’s appreciation for their magnanimous gift, it wishes the Andreoli family to know that it is the Chapter’s hope that the memory of their father and his impact on Ohio, will long be remembered through the Chapter 13, A.J. Andreoli Life Time Achievement Award.

News from Stephens College
Stephens College, an all-female private institution located in Columbia, MO, was established in 1833. The Stephens Department of Equestrian Studies offers bachelors of science degrees in both Business Management and Education, minors in Equestrian Studies and Animal Science, and a master's program in Therapeutic Instruction/Occupational Therapy. The College’s riding program began in 1925 and is home to the Prince of Wales Club, the oldest continually active riding club in the country.
Stephens College teams emerged victorious at international competition
Stephens College was host to an international saddle seat invitational competition with South Africa. The event, which took place December 11-12, 2009, was patterned after the World Cup competition. The Stephens teams emerged victorious, earning gold medals in both the three- and five-gaited events.
Ellen Beard, team coach and coordinator of equestrian operations at Stephens College, said the Stephens teams, whose members are students in the College’s Equestrian Studies program, practiced tirelessly to achieve their best against a very talented group of experienced international riders.
“The competition was stiff and brought out the best in the riders," said Beard. "Our South African friends graciously announced at the closing reception that this invitational was exceptional. The quality of hospitality, horses and sportsmanship was excellent. They marveled at all of the opportunities available at Stephens.”
Stephens Stables named as 2010 Most Notable Property
Stephens Stables has been named to the 2010 Most Notable Properties List by the City of Columbia Historic Preservation Commission. The program, which recognized seven historic properties, encourages the preservation of important historical properties and recognizes property owners who maintain and/or rehabilitate historic properties. A public reception honoring this year’s award recipients was held on February 2, 2010.
“Stephens Stables continues to be a local favorite – we know because of the daily visits we receive from community members of all ages,” Ellen Beard said. “Receiving this formal acknowledgement from the City of Columbia solidifies its intrinsic value as a property worth protecting.”
The Stables occupies 16 acres on the Stephens campus and boards approximately 40 horses. The facility comprises two multi-disciplinary barns with a total of 61 stalls, indoor and outdoor arenas, and a cross-country course.
Stephens student honored for equestrian achievements
Women's Intersport Network (WIN) for Columbia honored Mandy Martin as its WINner's Choice in recognition of outstanding performance and contributions to women's athletics. This marked the first time since the WIN Awards were established that the honor went to a Stephens student.
Martin is a well-known equestrian, being both an equitation national champion and a world's champion performance rider. In 2008 aboard The Daily Lottery, Martin won the Junior Five-Gaited World's Championship title and the ASR Four-Year-Old Five-Gaited Sweepstakes.

O'Connor to speak at ASHA Convention regarding drug rule change
David O'Connor, USEF President, will speak at the ASHA Convention Open Forum, Saturday, February 20, at 1:15 p.m., to explain the new USEF rule change regarding nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Under the previously existing USEF rules, no more than two of the seven approved NSAIDs are permitted to be in the plasma or urine of the horse at the time of competition, with the exception of the forbidden combination of Bute and Banamine.
The USEF Board of Directors has voted to approve a rule change to permit only one NSAID to be present in the horse at the time of competition, with an effective date of December 1, 2011. Until the single NSAID rule goes into effect, a new Disclosure Form must be filed in the show office (effective April 1, 2010) prior to the horse competing if the horse has been administered two NSAIDs in the five days preceding competition.
The 2010 ASHA Convention is Thursday, February 18, though Saturday, February 20, at the Griffin Gate Marriott in Lexington, Kentucky. For more information, visit http://www.saddlebred.com/ASHA-Annual-Meeting.

World Cup Application deadline extended, WEG PARTICIPATION announced
The deadline for submission of applications for the 2010 US Saddle Seat World Cup Team Selection has been extended to January 15, 2010. Applications are available online for riders interested in pursuing an opportunity to qualify for the teams that will represent the United States at the 2010 International Saddle Seat Equitation World Cup event, to be held October 6-8, 2010 at the Kentucky Fall Classic Horse Show in Shelbyville, Kentucky.
In addition, the Saddle Seat World Cup will be a featured part of the 2010 World Equestrian Games Equine Village at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. Riders from the US teams as well as members of the visiting International Saddle Seat World Cup teams will have the opportunity to participate in the prestigious WEG Equine Village.
“We are extremely excited about 2010. We’re looking forward to hosting a first-rate competition in Shelbyville, but we’re even more proud that we have the chance to be featured in the World Equestrian Games at the Equine Village in Lexington. This will be the opportunity that we’ve been waiting for, to show the world how incredible our athletes and our horses are,” said Ellen Beard, Executive Director of the organization. “The US Team Selection Trials will be the beginning of what we know will be a very exciting year for us, as we select the team we hope will return the gold medals and the World Cup trophies to the USA.”
Riders from all Saddle Seat breeds are strongly encouraged to apply for the 2010 teams, each of which consists of five team members and an alternate. The purpose of the Saddle Seat World Cup is to promote the discipline of Saddle Seat Equitation on an international level. The diverse breed affiliations involved in Saddle Seat Equitation in the United States create the unique opportunity to draw from an expanded pool of top riders. Horses from the Saddlebred, Morgan, Arabian and National Show Horse breeds will be used in the competition.
A total of twenty finalists will compete to become one of five team members or an alternate for the US Three-Gaited team. Up to 12 finalists will have earned their bids to the trials by winning one of several designated qualifying finals or by virtue of a breed association nomination. In addition, ten finalists will compete for the honors of Five-Gaited Team membership. Two automatic bids for this team will be extended to the winners of designated Five-Gaited equitation events while the remaining eight finalists are chosen from a pool of applicants.
The remaining finalists for the three-gaited team will be chosen from a pool of applicants. In the event of multiple finals wins or declined automatic bids, remaining finalist slots will be selected from the pool eligible applicants.
Riders may apply for both the three- and five-gaited teams but must submit separate application materials and fees for each team. In addition, in the event a rider qualifies for both teams, they may only represent the US on one team.
Complete details, selection guidelines and application materials are available for download at www.saddleseatworldcupusa.com. Deadline for receipt of completed application packets is 9 p.m. EST on January 15, 2010. Interested applicants must submit completed applications, a $150 non-refundable application fee (per team), a brief essay, letters of reference, DVD or video and two photographs. Applicants must be 14 years of age on January 1, 2010, but there is no maximum age for applicants. In addition, all riders must maintain current amateur certification with the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) to be eligible.
The US Team Selection Trials are slated for March 26-28, 2010 on the campus of William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri. William Woods graciously provides the horses used for the trials, which is designed to prepare riders for the atmosphere of the International event. The Team Selection Trials will consist of two days of competition during which riders will complete two rail sessions, two individual patterns and one personal interview. Scoring will be equally weighted among the riding portions to total 90%, while the interview will account for the remaining 10% of each rider’s total score. Teams will be announced on the final day of the trials.
For more information on the US Team Selection process please visit the official website or contact Executive Secretary Christy O’Donnell (e-mail at WCEquitation@aol.com or telephone at 813-760-0465). The US Saddle Seat World Cup is a registered 501(c)(3) corporation.

Members of United Professional Horsemen’s Association Chapter 14 announced today that Chapter 14 would give additional funding to provide continued support of the American Morgan Horse Association’s Silver Medal Program. Chapter 14 gave $1,000.00 to the AMHA Silver Medal Program in September to ensure that silver medal winners in the UPHA Chapter 14 area would receive their 2009 medals. UPHA Chapter 14 announced today that an additional $1,000.00 would be provided to AMHA to cover the cost of AMHA Silver Medals for 2010 winners in their chapter area. UPHA Chapter 14 includes all of the New England states, New York and Canada. Chapter 14 is proud to lead the way in support of the AMHA Silver Medal Program. It is the hope of UPHA Chapter 14 members that other UPHA chapters will meet the challenge by exploring ways in which they too might help to assist AMHA to continue to award the coveted silver medals to winners in their areas.

Press release issued by USEF on March 2, 2009:
D&M Program Notice Regarding Use of Liniments
By Dr. Stephen Schumacher
Recently, there have been some questions related to the use of liniments. The specific liniments in question are:
Equi-Block® Liniments by Miracle Corp.
Ingredients:
Menthol (3%), Purified Water, Isopropyl Alcohol, Chamomile Extract, Polysorbate 80, Olibanum Extract, Rosemary Oil, Capsicum Oleoresin, Carbomer, Trolamine, Methylparaben.
Thermaflex Liniment Gel by VitaFlex®
Ingredients:
Menthol 4.0%, Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), Plant Extracts of Calendula and Rosemary, Oil of Cajuput (Melaleuca Leucadendron), Other Ingredients include: Alcohol, Water, Thickeners, Benzyl Nicotinate, FD&C Yellow #5 and FD&C Blue #1.
Vetrolin® Liniment by Farnam
Ingredients:
Alcohol, Water, Green Soap, Camphor, Oil of Sassafras, Oil of Spike, Methyl Salicylate, Oil of Cedarwood, Oil of Rosemary and Oil of Thyme.
(Forbidden substances are noted in italics.)
The classification of these substances as Forbidden is neither a new policy nor a recent development. Some of the ingredients in the above listed liniments have been Forbidden substances for more than 20 years. These substances, and products containing them, are classified as Forbidden because of their potential actions on various body systems when administered intravenously, intramuscularly, subcutaneously or orally. However, when used topically and as recommended by their manufacturers, these products have not been associated with a positive by the Federation.
As a practical matter, provided the products containing these substances are administered only topically and as recommended by the manufacturer, there is no need for restricting their use during competitions under USEF rules. However, if these substances are used inappropriately (e.g., in a manner other than topically), this could result in a positive finding in the blood or urine of the horse, which would be a potential violation of the rules.
One exception is the substance capsaicin and closely related analogues (e.g., Capsicum Oleoresin as found in Equi-Block®.) There were four drug violations associated with the detection of capsaicin in the blood following topical administration at the 2008 Olympic Games. Neither of these substances or other capsaicin derivatives should be used topically in any poultice or liniment within the 7 days preceding competition.
It is important to note that many preparations produced for the equine market routinely have their formulations changed without any published notice. It is for this reason that the USEF Equine Drugs and Medications Program typically does not comment on products by name, but requests lists of ingredients. It would be irresponsible for the USEF to list name brand products as Forbidden or Permitted as there is no control or notification of changes in their ingredients.
Please contact the Equine Drugs and Medications Program office by phone (800) 633-2472 or by e-mail at medequestrian@aol.com if there are any questions regarding additional liniments than those addressed above.

SADDLEBRED RESCUE, INC. ANNOUNCES NEW LEASE PROGRAM
As part of their mission to widen the safety net for the saddle seat breeds, Saddlebred Rescue, Inc. is announcing the start of a new lease program in addition to their ongoing rescue and adoption efforts.
This exciting new program has the potential to bolster the growth of several important segments of the industry as well as provide meaningful jobs for a variety of horses.
Launched with the aid of a UPHA Grant, the new lease program will require lessees to be active (professional trainer) members of the UPHA. For an annual fee payable to Saddlebred Rescue, horses may be leased to trainers, who may then sub-lease them to their customers. Horses will remain the property of Saddlebred Rescue, and as such, may not be sold or transferred.
Unlike the horses purchased from livestock sales and in danger of going to slaughter, Saddlebred Rescue anticipates its pool of lease horses will come from the industry itself. Because it is a 501c3 nonprofit organization, the value of a horse donated to SBR for the lease program is eligible as a tax deduction (to the extent of the law). Saddlebred Rescue hopes to attract owners who may wish to donate a useable show horse and benefit from a tax credit while at the same time taking comfort in knowing that the animal will have a safe and secure home.
Horses will be evaluated and selected for the program on a case-by-case basis.
“Our hopes are that this might help trainers get new customers in the show ring, paving the way for these same customers to own a more advanced show horse down the line.” , Pat Johnson, Director of SBR noted.
For more information about donating a leasable horse, or applying to lease a horse, contact Pat Johnson at 908-304-3560.
