The UPHA Maria Knight Scholarship was established to honor UPHA Professional, Maria Knight and her commitment to providing a college education for her daughter. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit of the applicant’s high school or college transcripts, a resume demonstrating extracurricular activities both in relation to the applicant’s equestrian career and participation in activities in school and the community. Prior scholarships will be taken into consideration.
The purpose of the program is to provide a scholarship to children of professional horsemen. Applicants must have at least one parent, step-parent or legal guardian who is a professional horseman and a current Professional Member of UPHA. Applicant must have entered their senior year in high school at the time of application or accepted to (or currently enrolled) in an institution of higher education.
The UPHA Maria Knight Scholarship Program is funded through donations made to the program. The donations are set aside in a separate fund by the UPHA Foundation. Up to $10,000 annually may be distributed per year and may be divided among selected candidates. More than one recipient may be chosen per year. The scholarship money will be paid directly to the college/university for post-secondary educational expenses upon receipt of verification of enrollment. If more funds are available the amount distributed will be increased proportionately. If there are no eligible applicants in a given year the committee may choose not to award a scholarship for that year and increase the available funds for the following years.
Completed application, resume, reference letters, transcript and a photo suitable for publication must be received by May 31.
Letters of recommendation must be submitted by at least two individuals who are not members of your family. These letters must be signed and sent directly to UPHA by those making the recommendations. The letter should include the attributes and achievements they feel make the applicant worthy of receiving the scholarship.These letters are to be sent directly to UPHA by those making the recommendations.
